Environment

Waikiwi Farm enjoys the benefits of a long term planting program which commenced in the early 1970's. Waikiwi was the Supreme Winner of the 2007 Ballance Farm Environment Awards for the Waikato Region. This was recognition of the environmental practices evident in Waikiwi's soil management, total waterway fencing, and enhancement of the land through long term planting programmes.

David's father Bob began replacing existing tree rows with effective shelter belts, as well as constructing ponds to enhance wildlife in the early 1970's. The planting includes a combination of native trees, flaxes, and traditional trees. Waikiwi's 6.5 km creek boundary is fully fenced. Internal waterways are also fenced with native plantings or shelter belts. These plantings act as a filter system for agricultural run off. Planting trees has continued at Waikiwi since Bob began. The aesthetic value has created a positive working environment. Seasonal changes are enjoyed, as well as recreational activity that ponds and waterways offer.
